Twelve (12) people, majority of them being relatives heading home from a dowry payment ceremony, died after a vehicle they were traveling in lost control and rolled severally near Kanyonyoo junction along Kitui-Thika highway.

Several others including the driver and the couple that spearheaded the ceremony with their three children cheated death and sustained severe injuries.

The Saturday accident occured minutes to midnight and five kilometres to the group’s final destination-Nzokani village.

Police reports indicate nine of them died on the spot while three others succumbed in hospital.

Kitui County Police Commander Leah Kithei said the Nakimu Sacco vehicle had excess passengers though the number had not been established even as those who survived the accident saying it had 22 passengers.

The bodies were moved to Kitui Level Four hospital morgue.
