An accountant at Kitale Catholic Diocese was Friday charged with stealing Sh46 million from the church on diverse dates between late 2014 and mid last year.
The 40-year-old Jacob Nalada, who is an auditor at the church, reportedly transferred the monies at a bank in Kitale between November 2014 and July 31, 2021.
The church leadership hired an audit firm to scrutinize the diocese’s bank statements after the staff was reportedly spotted at the Kitale town bank despite having skipped work for “being sick”.
The firm would discover that Mr Nalada had transferred Sh46, 872, 774 from diocese’s four bank accounts.
Mr Nalada, who has worked at the Diocese for over 10 years, pleaded not guilty to stealing and theft by servant charges before Kitale Chief Magistrate Julius Ng’arng’ar.
He was released on Sh5 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail with reports indicating he was unable to raise the funds forcing him to be remanded at Kitale GK Prison.
He will remain in custody until November 17 when hearing of the case will commence.
