Police in Mbeere, Embu County have launched investigations into circumstances surrounding death of a man and his son whose decomposing bodies were discovered in a dam on Saturday.
A 65-year-old Julius Mwaniki and his son Stephen Muriithi had left their home in Thagana village on Wednesday to trace their lost livestock in a neighbouring Machakos County never to return.
Their bodies were found floating in Gitaru dam by some residents spreading fear and panic among the villagers.
Gitaru dam is rock and earth-filled embankment on the Tana River and connects border between Embu and Machakos counties.
It remains unclear whether the two were killed and their bodies dumped into the dam or drowned while crossing to the other side aboard a boat with investigators seeking to unravel the cause of the deaths.
The bodies were moved to Embu Level Five Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
“We are investigating the cause of the deaths and believe autopsy will aid in unraveling what transpired,” a senior police officer who sought anonymity said.
