A driver who knocked down a traffic police officer along Sheikh Abdallah road in Mombasa a week ago has been charged with attempted murder.

Martin Kimeu, who was driving a Toyota Probox, was flagged down for allegedly operating without a valid insurance sticker but instead made a U-turn, knocked down Police Constable Phiona Mutua Ndanu and then fled.

The suspect allegedly disappeared for three days after committing the crime which left the officer nursing injuries on her leg and both hands. She is hospitalised.

The incident occured near Coast Referral Hospital.

Before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Ritah Amwayi, the suspect pleaded not guilty to the offence with his lawyer saying he should have instead been charged with traffic offence.

He was released on a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of the similar amount.

The case will be mentioned on March 14 this year.
