Milimani Law Courts has sentenced to one-year imprisonment, without the option of a fine, former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel for reportedly assaulting a female legislator five years ago.

The court heard that Mr Lempurkel committed the offence against MP Sarah Korere (then Nominated) at Harambee House in 2016.

In his defense, the former MP claimed that the CCTV cameras had not captured the incident claiming that the incident resulted from political rivalry.

But Milimani Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani dismissed the claims saying the room had no such cameras in the board room where the offence took place.

The court also established that the two legislators had been served with a P3 form to record and report the assault but Mr Lempurkel did not surrender his back despite claiming that he was also assaulted.

The sentence, the court ruled, would serve as an example to men who violate women’s rights.
