The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched probe into the killing of a Form Four student by police officers who were pursuing a gang in Lakeview, Nakuru.

Whitney Atieno, 19, was together with a friend Ruth Waithera at a salon near their home when she was shot dead.

Reports indicate that while at the salon repairing their hair, the pair heard a commotion and rushed outside to see what was happening only for a live bullet to hit the friend on the left arm and exit on Whitney’s chest.

The student succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Nakuru Referral Hospital about three hours after she was shot.

IPOA Chair Mrs Anne Makori said a Rapid Response team had been discharged to Nakuru to carry out further investigations into the incident including police involvement.

“Where criminal culpability is established, the authority shall make recommendations, including prosecution,” the Authority’s statement read in part.
