A man who allegedly defiled his 10-year-old niece repeatedly leading to her death has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The 56-year-old Haron Cherono is said to have committed the offense against the Grade three girl who had been under his family’s care for more than five years.
According to witnesses, the convict had warned the victim of dire consequences if she revealed what she had been going through.
In May last year, the minor’s teacher insisted to know what was going on after noticing the girl looked sickly prompting her to reveal that her uncle had been defiling her.
Later, she would flee from her home but was rescued by administrators who took her to Baringo County Referral Hospital and later to Sunrise Children’s Home before she died two months later.
According to the medical reports presented to the court, the minor had suffered renal dysfunction as a result of the sexual assault.
The suspect however pleaded not guilty to the offense claiming that he had been framed by his wife who he was not in good terms with.
Kabarnet Court Chief Magistrate Judy Wanjala said the girl’s death resulted from defilement and had she survived, the suspect would have been charged with defilement.
The court, after considering the circumstances of the crime and age of the victim, convicted Mr Cherono of manslaughter.
