A 20-year-old man suspected of killing his 80-year-old grandmother in Old Town, Mombasa was today arraigned over the offence.

Abdulaziz Ali Swaleh is said to have attacked and hacked the granny while asleep in her bedroom Saturday night following a domestic tiff.

Reports indicate that the suspect slit the grandmother’s throat with a kitchen knife.

When he appeared before Mombasa High Court yesterday, detectives sought to detain him further to allow recording of witness statements and suspect’s mental assessment.

The sleuths said releasing the suspect might interfere with witnesses who were yet to record statement with police.

The sleuths also want to analyse the suspect’s mobile phone data as well as that of the deceased.

“In the interest of justice, the suspect should be denied bond pending finalization of probe,” Police Constable Mapenzi told court.

Applying to hold the suspect for 14 more days, Mr Mapenzi said during the time, they will also be able to establish the cause of death.

The court allowed the application.
