Some 13 health workers have so far been infected with Coronavirus in Tharaka Nithi County.

The 13 are part of the 73 people who have tested positive for the disease in the county according to the county health executive Dr Gichuyia Nthuraku.

Speaking to the media, Dr Nthuraku said six patients have so far died, 55 recovered and 12 are still grappling with the disease.

Dr Nthuraku said currently, there is no patient in hospital isolation wards of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and that the infection rate was low during the second wave different from what is being witnessed in other counties.

“All our 15 ICU beds and isolation beds are not occupied,” said Dr Nthuraku.

The official however warned that the county risks recording is an increase in infection cases because people have completely ignored health protocols.

“People are walking in public without face masks and no longer keeping the necessary social distance a behavior that may cause us more trouble,” he said.

The pandemic fatality rate is 8.5 percent and the patients are aged between 10 years and 70 years.

So far, the county has collected a total of 1302 samples and is going on with the exercise especially for those showing signs of the disease and those who reportedly had contact with Covod-19 patients.
