A police officer has been arrested over escape of eight prisoners from Thika Police Station in Kiambu.

Mr Amos Muteti who was day sentry at the station Wednesday night when the prisoners facing robbery with violence counts vanished, is assisting in ongoing investigations.

The officer, police reports indicate, was called by one of the remandees in the cell to take him to toilet and while opening the door, the descended on him with blows and kicks.

The prisoners allegedly took away the keys to the main door to cells from the officer and escaped through the roof.

They included John Mbugua Murege, Livingstone Mwangi Njau, Arthur Ndugu Kavemba, Allan Njogu Mugai, Eric Ngigi Musige, Francis Mwangi Matheri, Bunton Kariuki Mbugua and Joseph Githu Nyaguthii who was rearrested 500 metres from the station.

Police officers have been mobilised and are currently combing neighbouring areas to rearrested the eight still at large.
