Police in Murang’a are hunting down a rape and robbery suspect who attacked a female police officer with a panga and escaped from Ndaka-ini Police Station.

A 31-year-old David Kamau Muturi reportedly opened the grill door to the cell he was held in and picked a panga from the report office that he used to attack the officer who was on a night duty with before leaving her unconscious.

Police reports indicate that the suspect had been charged at Kandara Law Courts and remanded at Thika correctional facility before his charges were amended to capital offense and later ordered to to be held at Murang’a Prisons Remand.

According to Gatanga Sub-County police boss Peter Mucheru, the facility declined to admit him as he lacked a Covid-19 vaccination certificate and he was therefore taken to Ndaka-ini Police Station.

Police have launched investigation to establish his whereabouts.

Upon arrest, he is likely to be additionally charged with escaping legal custody and assaulting an officer.

The police boss said they were hopeful that the suspect would soon be apprehended.
