Fresh details have emerged over the Nkubu town shooting incident where a police officer manning one of the banks in the town turned the gun on a man he was spotted talking to.
Shocking revelations show that officer Roy Muchiri shot Mr Pharis Karani Gitobu for not wearing a face mask.
According to eye witnesses, the duo had a misunderstanding before the officer opened fire.
Reports indicate that a senior officer who was checking on the bank guards met the officer with the victim and on enquiring if all was well, he answered in affirmative only to later hear a gunshot from the area the two were standing.
After the incident, the officer surrendered himself to Nkubu Police Station where he was arrested and immediately disarmed.
Residents have taken to social media to condemn the act saying that it was unfortunate that the police officers tasked to protect them were harming them instead.
“I wonder in whose hands are we safe if police officers have turned against us instead of protecting us. The officer should have instead arrested him (Mr Gitobu) and taken him to court,” said Mr James Munene.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has since launched probe into the matter to establish the circumstances surrounding the Tuesday incident.
