Two men have been arrested after they were found transporting over 500 kilogrammes of Sandalwood in Kiambu.

Serious Crimes detectives intercepted the lorry ferrying the endangered species along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway within Kijabe area in Kiambu.

The two suspects Joseph Nguro and Stephen Ochieng are detained in Kijabe awaiting arraignment tomorrow.

The sandalwood, which is among the most expensive woods in the world, was concealed as parcels destined for Busia border.

Sandalwood was declared an endangered species in 2006 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) following its over-exploitation and mushrooming demand.

Kenya banned its harvest the following year.
