The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) achieved 36 percent of its 17, 294 new voter registration target in Isiolo County in the just concluded enhanced exercise.

The total number of new registered voters as at November 5 was 6, 222 with more than 2000 voters having transferred their votes across the 10 wards in the county.

Wabera, Oldonyiro and Burat wards recorded the highest number of newly registered voters with 1846, 724 and 681 respectively while Chari posted the lowest at 226 voters.

Distribution in other wards was as follows: Bulapesa (607), Cherab (558), Kinna (554), Garbatulla (374), Sericho (337) and Ngaremara (315).

However, Bulapesa topped the list of wards with the highest number of vote transfers at 715 followed by Wabera and Cherab at 569 votes and 222 votes respectively.

The low new voter registration turnout was blamed on the ongoing drought that has forced pastoralists to migrate in search of water and pasture for their animals.

Lack of Identity Cards by eligible voters also denied youths chance to participate in the exercise with a section lamenting over long vetting procedures while applying for the IDs.

The electoral agency only achieved 1, 519, 294 new voters against the six million target countrywide.
