A section of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) supporters in Isiolo have defended nomination of former Laikipia Woman Rep Cate Waruguru’s kin Kelvin Mbuthia to the county assembly saying every Kenyan had the right to work anywhere in the country.

Mr Mbuthia who quit Laikipia’s Thingithu MCA race in the August 9 elections after losing in the party primaries has been under heated criticism for replacing some local leaders who reportedly campaigned for the party and ensured its victory.

But the group maintained that they had trust in Mr Mbuthia and Ms Boncha Dekha who have been nominated by President William Ruto-led party and urged those opposed to the party’s decision to present their grievances to the office.

Mr Nura Hassan, who unsuccessfully vied for Burat MCA seat, said some Isiolo residents had been nominated to county assemblies in other parts of the country and therefore those from other counties had the right to also work in Isiolo.

“We are not interested in where one comes from but what they will do for our people,” said Mr Hassan.

Borana Council of Elders (BCE) Vice Chair Adan Galma urged locals to shun politicking saying time had come for the leaders to fulfill the promises they had made to the electorates.

“He (Mbuthia) represents youths from across the country and we are happy for him. We will accord him the support he needs to realize the development that our people need,” the elder said.

Last week, a group of UDA supporters decried what they termed as unfairness in the nomination process with some of those who had applied for the posts claiming they were shortchanged and their names replaced by some politicians’ cronies.

The group then said Fatuma Abdullahi’s name was at the top of the list and that it had been replaced with Mr Mbuthia’s.

“He (Mbuthia) cannot represent us because he is not conversant with the challenges our people face,” Burat Ward MCA Nicholas Lorot earlier said.
