Over 20 aspirants have declared their interest in Elgeyo Marakwet Senate seat following the recent nomination of the two-term legislator Kipchumba Murkomen by President William Ruto to head the Transport, Roads and Public Works Ministry.

Former MPs Daniel Rono (Keiyo South) and William Kisang (Marakwet West), Pioneer County Assembly Speaker Albert Kochei and former MCA Neddy Kiptoo (Nominated) and activist Jerotich Seii are among those angling for the seat.

Majority of the candidates have already rolled out their campaigns ahead of gazettment of the by-election date by the electoral agency.

It remains unclear whether former Governor Alex Tolgos who lost to Murkomen in the August 9 elections will reconsider vying again.

Whoever wins Dr Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance ticket will be among the frontrunners in the race and might bag the seat due to the party’s wave in the region where only two MPs were elected as Independents.
