An Isiolo based journalist has declared interest in the highly contested Wabera ward MCA seat vowing to give more than eight candidates a run for their money.
The local FM’s journalist Lewis Mutwiri said his quest was prompted by desire to address the horde of challenges the locals were facing under the leadership of the current MCA Abdi Duba including neglect and discrimination.
During an exclusive interview with The Press Point, Mr Mutwiri said time had come for the electorates to inject fresh blood into the leadership of the ward by electing in young people who he said had the energy and ability to propel the ward to the next level.
“It is high time our people supported youths. We have experienced leadership of the old and we can attest that they have not adequately addressed our problems,” he said.
His priorities will be on education and empowerment for the youth, women, the elderly and persons living with disabilities.
To address the challenges that PWDs in the county face, the MCA hopeful said he will push for policies that will require all government and public offices be constructed in a disability-friendly manner.
PWDs have been facing challenges accessing several offices due to lack of friendly structures locking them out of various government opportunities.
“Majority of those living with disabilities cannot access various services including schools because the buildings are not friendly to them. Something should be done,” he told The Press Point.
If elected, Mr Mutwiri says, he will also concentrate on ensuring learners from needy backgrounds access reasonable bursary funds saying that a majority from the ward had dropped out of school due to lack of school fees.
“Leaders should not sit and watch while many children drop out of school for lack of school fees. We need to fix the situation and I am the person to do it,” he maintained.
The journalist will battle it out with Mr Abdi, ex-MCA Salesio Kiambi, George Karithi, Hellen Makena, Sadia Abdi and Lucy Muthee among others.
Mr Kiambi seems to have won hearts of many residents owing to his past development track record and remains the main challenger for the seat alongside the incumbent and Mr Mutwiri who hopes to use his wide connection to subdue the competitors.
